UK Jersey Young Members Weekend

Friday 7th - Sunday 9th August 2015

Hosted by The Clear Family, Pierrepont Farm, Frensham Surrey

UK Jersey Young Members Weekend 2015

Beautiful weather and 24 enthusiastic competitors made for an exciting and successful Youth Weekend for 2015. The weekend began on Friday afternoon with all arriving at Pierrepont Farm to pitch tents and set up camp. A game of rounder’s provided some early evening entertainment, before the opening briefing from Youth Chairman Ben Etteridge. Ben introduced the Clear Family and Judges for the Weekend Nick Dain and Frank Poskitt. Following the evening meal the teams for the weekend were announced and they then got underway introducing themselves to their show team of five heifers and cow that they would take control of and prepare starting with bedding, feeding and watering.

Saturday morning saw an early start for all, with mucking out before breakfast so that the National Clipping Competition could make a prompt start at 9am. Nine members competed under the watchful eye of both Nick and Frank, clipping the calf they had selected from their teams in an hour before washing it within 30 minutes and then setting its top line and completing final preparations in the remaining 30 minutes. All nine demonstrated their ability and put a huge effort in, with Andrea Vale selected as the winner by the judges for her tremendous skill and overall finish, closely followed by Peter Cotton in second and James Bolderston in third. 13 yr old Emily Davis in fifth, entering the competition for the first time was also commended by the Judges for a great job and awarded a prize as top novice clipper. Meanwhile the rest of the young members busied themselves washing the rest of their animals and joining in on a clipping demonstration given by Sarah Liddle before starting to clip the other five animals. All had a go at clipping and it is inspiring to watch those more experienced help and encourage their team mates who are just learning.

Late afternoon saw Judge Nick Dain provide an insight into what he would be looking for in the handling classes on the Sunday during a demo which was followed by stock judging and reason giving on a class of six second calvers. Following a hog roast supper, the adults and spectators also had chance to judge the class before Frank gave his placings and reasons on the class. James Bolderston having the closest order to Frank won the stock judging trophy.

Sunday’s competition got underway with two presentation classes, with the teams firstly putting forward their cow for inspection then their best heifer. Nick closely scrutinised each animal from nose to tail, before allocating placings based on both the cleanliness and overall show preparation. Next the handling classes, two junior classes saw four members compete in each ageing from 6 to 10 yrs old. First in Junior A class was William Spence closely followed by Molly Bolderston, they went head to head in the Junior Championship against Charlie Bolderston and Frank Griffin who had secured first and second respectively from the Junior B class. Whilst Nick commended all eight juniors on doing a great job it was Charlie and Frank from the B class that he settled on for his champion and reserve.

In the intermediates the standard continued to improve and from the eight forward Joshua Etteridge just edged ahead of Emily Davis in a close placing with Harry Bolderston in third. The senior class again saw 8 compete with Nick Dain putting them through their paces and changing calves and handlers before reaching his decision to start his line with Claire Daw, followed by her cousin Zoe Clear, with Andrea Vale in third. The Senior Championship also saw calves and handlers swap, something that Nick pointed out in his reasons he wouldn’t normally do, but he wanted to ensure he had made the right decision between Zoe Clear and Joshua Etteridge for the Reserve spot. Nick described his Champion handler Claire Daw as ‘always being in full control of her calf and it was the way she flowed with her calf that made her the winner today’, following her was Zoe in the Reserve spot.

Following a break for lunch the final presentations were made. 11 trophies were presented in all culminating in the announcement of the Top Team, this year going to team ‘Bracken’ - James Bolderston, Zoe Clear, Emily Davis, Ben Baines, Edward Spence and Charlie Bolderston. The weekend was rounded off with Ben offering thanks not just to his Judges Nick and Frank for an excellent job and their continued support of the Youth, but also to hosts Mike, Bev and particularly Zoe who had put in a tremendous effort to get the animals halter broken ahead of the weekend. To all the sponsors whose contributions were invaluable and finally to Matt Pye and Nicola Dean who were both instrumental in the smooth running of the weekend. The 2015 event was definitely a success with all who participated (both young and old) learning along the way, and indulging in great camaraderie.
