Carlisle Pedigree Dairy Day

Wednesday 19th April 2017

The April Border and Lakeland Pedigree Dairy Sale had a world class offering of outstanding dairy cattle giving large volumes of milk and many bred from prolific cow families that have proven their worth over the past decades. The sale also incorporated the annual Spring Coloured Breeds sale and featured Jersey and Ayrshire animals again of impeccable quality and breeding with two special consignments from the Clifton and Monument Jersey herds.

Jersey Sale

The overall Jersey Champion went to the Ravenfield Jersey herd who won both of the Jersey classes with two gorgeous animals. The Champion, Ravenfield Milkys Tulip was sired by Tequila from a Vindication dam. Tulip displayed a lot of class and excellent locomotion and had a tremendous will to milk for a young heifer recoded at 26kgs. She sold for a 1,750gns to McCreey Farms, Newton Stewart.

Richard Saxby owner of the Saxown Jersey herd consigned two very milky cows both giving 30kgs and both bred from highly valued pedigrees. Saxown Success Hedi 18 sold for 1,680gns to Grahams Family Dairy, Stirling. Hedi was fresh in her second with two famous show winning sisters and bred from two generations of Excellent 93 dams, she was a popular lot for many of the Jersey breeders.

Clifton Jersey Spring Selection Sale

The Bland family from Abbot Lodge, Penrith sold a wonderful group of high quality Jersey cattle from their highly regarded and highly productive Jersey herd. This special sale was planned to make the transition into their new robotic milking system a little easier and they gave auctioneers H&H the task of selecting their very best for this important event. They have a reputation for selling their very best, having sold two milking heifers that went on to win at the Royal Highland Show and the latest star to leave the Clifton herd was Clifton Miles Cranberry VG89 2yr who was Hon. Mention All Britain Senior Heifer in Milk in 2016, now owned by Potterswalls Jerseys in Ireland.

Topping the trade at 2,800gns was Clifton Vanahlem May, sired by Pannoo Abe Vanahlem and bred from two Very Good dams both with big records. May was only one week into her first lactation and had all the makings of a big time show heifer, she hopefully will grace the show ring at the Royal Highland in a few weeks time for her new owners TA & E Jackson Guillyhill Farm, Dumfries.

The overall quality of the milking heifers was a real credit to the whole team at Clifton each heifer displaying youthful well attached mammary systems and an outstanding will to produce high quality milk. These were modern Jersey designed for dairy farmers of the future reflecting the average of £1666 on the highest in a Jersey sale for many a year.

Clifton Pride Orchid sired by Potterswalls Belles Pride sold for 1,800gns giving 23kgs. She was a fresh heifer at the time of selection and had developed so much in a few weeks after calving at 21 months old. She was purchased by Grahams Family Dairy, Stirling.

The entire 2015 group of heifers were sold mainly due to calve from June to September and topping this amazing group of well grown and well developed heifers was Clifton Tequila Bracken 2 who sold for 2,300gns to DA Howie & Sons Morwick Farm, Morpeth due to Ahlem Genominator sexed for August. The Bracken cow family are the stand out cows at Clifton with almost all of them classifying Excellent or Very Good and testing over 6% butterfat and 4% protein. Maternal sister to the dam of this fine heifer was Clifton Tequila Bracken VG98 2yr who was All Britain Snr 2yr in 2015 after winning Interbreed Champion at the Royal Welsh and standing Reserve Champion at UK Dairy Expo only a few weeks fresh.

Clifton Excitation Yarrow sired by Bridon Excitation sold for 1,600gns bred from an Excellent dam and a Very Good 88 grand dam again both cows with lactation over 7000kgs. She was carrying a service to Clifton Ceasar due for August.

If you are wondering if there was any bargains in the Clifton sale there was, Clifton Gold Cranberry sold for 1,300gns and with probably the best pedigree in the catalogue. Maternal sister to the dam is Clifton Miles Cranberry VG89 2yr who was Hon. Mention All Britain Snr 2yr 2016 for Potterswalls Jerseys in Ireland. This exciting young prospect now joins Glanmor Jerseys in Wales.

Monument Jersey Sale

David and Marion Holiday have been great supporters of the Jersey breed over the years showing at most of the local shows and National Show with many noted Championships recorded along the way. This reduction of the special group of Jerseys included all their top cow families with the Blackberry, Leana, Nonette and Regina all on offer.

First to sell from the Monument herd was Monument Excitation Leana a freshly calved cow in her second lactation bred from the 2014 Cumberland and Skelton Show Champion Hollside Comerica Leana EX93 who was Hon. Mention All Britain that same year. This perfect uddered cow sold for 1,800gns to PA&Jm Astley, Powys.

Monument Miles Blackberry VG85 2yr sold for the same price to the Regatta Jersey herd near Shipley. Milies Blackberry was due to go dry due in June to Comestar Beautiful. Her dam was the winning two year old at UK dairy Expo in 2014.
